PROGRAM DETAILS:

Accelerated Reader (AR): Elementary students are given the opportunity during Library time to choose books on the AR list and take computerized tests on the books they read. The computer tracks their scores and awards are given to students that accumulate the most points. Students continually increase their reading skills through this program.

Art: The Art Program is designed to develop our student’s creativity and ability through many hands-on activities. Since art takes on many different forms and ideas, students are constantly increasing their imagination and skills. Art projects are displayed throughout the campus.

Chapel: The Spiritual growth of our students (teaching them how to live and lead) is the number one priority of Orlando Christian Prep. To effectively reach this goal, each week our students meet corporately for an amazing time of praise and worship and a challenging message from God’s Word. Elementary classes have numerous opportunities to perform in front of their peers through drama or worship. Speakers consist of staff members and guest speakers throughout the Christian community.

Community Outreach: Students develop leadership ability by first learning to SERVE others. Students have the opportunity to serve others through our Community Outreach program. In 2007-2008 students broke an all time record while collecting food items for our annual Thanksgiving Drive. 2,301 food items were collected. This allowed OCP to give more than a weeks worth of groceries to 27 families as well as stock the pantries of the Orlando Rescue Mission and the Central Florida Children’s home. Additional community endeavors include collecting 500 shoebox gifts for a local elementary school for underprivileged children and various mission projects (locally and globally).

Extended Care: OCP’s extended care program includes before and aftercare, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The extended care workers are veterans that have been at OCP for quite some time. They love the children and take their care seriously. An afternoon snack is provided as well as time for homework to be completed or worked on and playground time.

Field Trips: Each class enjoys at least one field trip per year. Fourth graders always go to St. Augustine, as they study Florida history. Other class trips vary from year to year. Permission slips with details about the trip are always sent home well in advance.

Media Center: The Media Center is experiencing an on-going renovation. As funds are raised for the renovation, each additional phase will be completed. The Media Center uses technology as its greatest resource. OCP has purchased on-line resources for each student to have free access to novels, periodicals and encyclopedias. Access is available in the Media Center or at home. Username and passwords are available through Librarian, Miss Roy.

Music: Led by award winning music artist Carla Burleson, our music classes are a favorite of our students. Mrs. Burleson was a lead singer for the contemporary Christian music group, TRUTH. She has been featured on numerous television specials and has won awards for her musical talent. She brings her contagious energy and love of music into the classroom creating an amazing musical environment for the students.

Physical Education: P.E. teacher, Mrs. McPherson challenges students to perform at their best physical ability while encouraging them to increase their performance. Focus is placed on developing physical endurance, coordination, teamwork and sportsmanship. Students in first grade and up trains for and completes each year, the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge.

Spanish: Students enjoy 30 minutes of Spanish instruction each week. Students learn the fundamentals of the Spanish language, increasing their understanding and word bank each year.

Technology: Students attend computer class in our state of the art computer lab for 35 minutes each week. Classroom concepts are often reinforced through the computer class. Keyboarding skills, typing, spreadsheets and desktop publishing are just a few of the skills students learn in Elementary.
